HAROLD W. ANDERSON (01308082) entered the armed service on April 2, 1942, and was sent to the 90th Infantry Division at Camp Barkley, Texas, as a buck private.
After attending Officer’s School at Fort Benning, Georgia, he was assigned to the 80th Infantry Division at Camp Forest, Tennessee. Following training in Tennessee, he went to Camp Phillips, Kansas, and then participated in desert maneuvers in Arizona.
He departed for the European Theatre of War on June 6, 1944, aboard the Queen Mary. Sixty days later, upon arrival in Europe, the 80th Division became part of Patton’s 3rd Army. The first major battle was at Falaise Gap in France. Continuing eastward through many battles, his unit was involved in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium, where they drove a wedge into the German lines to rescue American wounded soldiers.
Lt. Anderson’s awards include the Bronze Star, Unit Citation, Meritorious Service Plaque, European Theatre of Operation Ribbon with 4 Battle Stars, and the Combat Infantry Badge.
After VE Day, he was attached to an Armored Division for transportation back to the United States and was discharged in December 1945 as a Lieutenant.
He now lives in Red Oak, Iowa.
